To prevent this damage two precautions sometimes, your builder will leave the unstrained edges as he would cut the panel to fit windows, doors or into other areas. These edges will allow the seepage of water and create nuisance.
The best way to check the water seepage is to paint the unstained edges with a sealer so that there is not any bare space.
Another precaution that should be taken while repairing is to correct the overdriven nails. These nails if driven deeply will allow the moisture and water to penetrate the hardboard siding leading to damage.
To repair this, take out the overdriving nail and fill the hole with caulk. Now position the new nail adjacent to the filled hole. You can apply caulk over it and repaint it if the nail head is 1/8 of an inch or less into the siding.
This protection will help to preserve the style as well as life of the hardboard siding. A regular maintenance is the key to preservation of your home from damages.
